Riyadh
Riyadh (/rɨˈjɑːd/; Arabic: الرياض ar-Riyāḍ Najdi pronunciation: [er.rɪˈjɑːdˤ], is the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia. It is also the capital of Riyadh Province, and belongs to the historical regions of Najd and Al-Yamama. It is situated in the center of the Arabian Peninsula on a large plateau, and is home to 5.7 million people, and the urban centre of a region with a population of close to 7.3 million people.
The city is divided into 15 municipal districts, managed by Riyadh Municipality headed by the mayor of Riyadh, and the Riyadh Development Authority, chaired by the governor of Riyadh Province, Faisal bin Bandar Al Saud. The current mayor of Riyadh is Abdullah bin Abdulrahman Almogbel, appointed in 2012. Riyadh has the largest all-female university in the world, the Princess Nora bint Abdul Rahman University. It has been designated a global city.
History
Early history
During the Pre-Islamic era the city at the site was called Hajr (Arabic: حجر), and was reportedly founded by the tribe of Banu Hanifa. Hajr served as the capital of the province of Al Yamamah, whose governors were responsible for most of central and eastern Arabia during the Umayyad and Abbasid eras. Al-Yamamah broke away from the Abbasid Empire in 866 and the area fell under the rule of the Ukhaydhirites, who moved the capital from Hajr to nearby Al Kharj. The city then went into a long period of decline. In the 14th century, North African traveller Ibn Battuta wrote of his visit to Hajr, describing it as "the main city of Al-Yamamah, and its name is Hajr". Ibn Battuta goes on to describe it as a city of canals and trees with most of its inhabitants belonging to Bani Hanifa, and reports that he continued on with their leader to Mecca to perform the Hajj.

Neville Wakefield, formerly of MoMA PS1, Frieze Projects, and Desert X, returns to lead the curation of the show, alongside Maya Al Athel, who served as artistic manager of the festival in 2022. Last year, the exhibition considered light as a signal of change, tracing the role light plays in shaping our perception of the world. For 2023, the show celebrates light as a flux, where artists as cartographers of light comprehend the dynamic nature of human and cultural identity amidst the shifting sands of time.

Fantastic Dreams was commissioned for the Noor Riyadh Festival and, as the title suggests, it is a fantastic journey into the world of dreams, punctuated by the different cycles of sleep. In this story our hero has entered an infinite sleep in which they travel through a world of dreams. As the body sleeps, the mind awakens. Both evolve in a universe that passes from calm awakening to deep sleep and then paradoxical sleep, in an endless loop.

"Vibrance" which was recently exhibited as part of the Noor Riyadh Festival is an incredible interactive art installation that uses voice and movement to reveal the invisible waves of sound. Through the use of a 3D camera, microphone, real-time video, a transparent led screen, and a matrix of moving lights, this kinetic light sculpture is able to generate unique artwork for every participant.

DIALOGUE is a luminous exchange between two of the most recognizable towers of Riyadh’s skyline: Kingdom Center Tower and Al Faisaliyah Tower. In this discussion light takes the place of words as a means to express feelings and impressions. As if they have a life of their own, the two towers appear to sense each other and express themselves in ways akin to Morse code or semaphore flags. Each luminous color takes on a meaning to translate moods, feelings, emotions, and personality traits. DIALOGUE is conceived as an ode to the power of communication: a celebration of diversity and creativity between individuals as well as between nations.
Watch the beautiful interplay of laser beams between Al Faisaliah and Kingdom Towers. And make sure to listen to the synchronised soundtrack. The best vantage points are in downtown Olaya or on King Fahad Road – or see it all from anywhere in the city up to a distance of 10km.
The Largest Light Art Festival in the World has returned for its third edition, which runs until December 16, 2023. Its accompanying exhibition runs through to March 2, 2024. This citywide spectacle will bathe Riyadh in a glow of large-scale light art, captivating building projections, performances, and beyond. Witness artistry unfold in five hubs across the city.

Tuwaiq Sculpture is an annual sculpture symposium that brings local and international artists together to create public artworks in a live setting. Through an interactive program of workshops, school visits, and talks, Tuwaiq Sculpture engages diverse communities and bolsters cultural exchanges. Christopher Bauder is a Berlin-based international light artist and designer. With his team and musical support, he has created internationally successful installations such as Deep Web and Skalar. Bauder's audiovisual performances always take place at the interface between art and technology.
For the Noor Riyadh Festival, Bauder teamed up with Bulgarian techno producer and DJ KiNK (Strahil Velchev), who is highly celebrated for his dynamic, spontaneous live performances to produce AXION, a large-scale light art installation located in the Saudi Arabian desert.
"With its grid-like array of light tubes and mile-long sky lights, AXION resembles a giant scientific device for space exploration, particle detection, or interstellar communication. But once you step inside, it is a reflection on the potential of axions, dark matter, and the idea of the unknown."

Noor Riyadh, the Largest Light Art Festival in the World, has returned for its third edition, which ran until December 16, 2023. The Art Fair Guy visited the accompanying exhibition at the Riyadh JAX District, which runs through to March 2, 2024. This citywide spectacle bathes Riyadh in a glow of large-scale light art, captivating building projections, performances, and beyond.
The accompanying exhibition is titled 'Refracted Identities, Shared Futures', and is held at the Riyadh art space in JAX District. Neville Wakefield, formerly of MoMA PS1, Frieze Projects, and Desert X, returns to lead the curation of the show, alongside Maya Al Athel, who served as artistic manager of the festival in 2022. Last year, the exhibition considered light as a signal of change, tracing the role light plays in shaping our perception of the world. For 2023, the show celebrates light as a flux, where artists as cartographers of light comprehend the dynamic nature of human and cultural identity amidst the shifting sands of time.

Paris-based Bruno Ribeiro is an artist with over 15 years of international experience. "Vibrance" which was recently exhibited as part of the Noor Riyadh Festival is an incredible interactive art installation that uses voice and movement to reveal the invisible waves of sound. Through the use of a 3D camera, microphone, real-time video, a transparent led screen, and a matrix of moving lights, this kinetic light sculpture is able to generate unique artwork for every participant.

DIALOGUE is a luminous exchange between two of the most recognizable towers of Riyadh’s skyline: Kingdom Center Tower and Al Faisaliyah Tower. In this discussion light takes the place of words as a means to express feelings and impressions. As if they have a life of their own, the two towers appear to sense each other and express themselves in ways akin to Morse code or semaphore flags. Each luminous color takes on a meaning to translate moods, feelings, emotions, and personality traits. DIALOGUE is conceived as an ode to the power of communication: a celebration of diversity and creativity between individuals as well as between nations.
Watch the beautiful interplay of laser beams between Al Faisaliah and Kingdom Towers. And make sure to listen to the synchronised soundtrack. The best vantage points are in downtown Olaya or on King Fahad Road – or see it all from anywhere in the city up to a distance of 10km.

Riyadh
Riyadh (/rɨˈjɑːd/; Arabic: الرياض ar-Riyāḍ Najdi pronunciation: [er.rɪˈjɑːdˤ], is the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia. It is also the capital of Riyadh Province, and belongs to the historical regions of Najd and Al-Yamama. It is situated in the center of the Arabian Peninsula on a large plateau, and is home to 5.7 million people, and the urban centre of a region with a population of close to 7.3 million people.
The city is divided into 15 municipal districts, managed by Riyadh Municipality headed by the mayor of Riyadh, and the Riyadh Development Authority, chaired by the governor of Riyadh Province, Faisal bin Bandar Al Saud. The current mayor of Riyadh is Abdullah bin Abdulrahman Almogbel, appointed in 2012. Riyadh has the largest all-female university in the world, the Princess Nora bint Abdul Rahman University. It has been designated a global city.
History
Early history
During the Pre-Islamic era the city at the site was called Hajr (Arabic: حجر), and was reportedly founded by the tribe of Banu Hanifa. Hajr served as the capital of the province of Al Yamamah, whose governors were responsible for most of central and eastern Arabia during the Umayyad and Abbasid eras. Al-Yamamah broke away from the Abbasid Empire in 866 and the area fell under the rule of the Ukhaydhirites, who moved the capital from Hajr to nearby Al Kharj. The city then went into a long period of decline. In the 14th century, North African traveller Ibn Battuta wrote of his visit to Hajr, describing it as "the main city of Al-Yamamah, and its name is Hajr". Ibn Battuta goes on to describe it as a city of canals and trees with most of its inhabitants belonging to Bani Hanifa, and reports that he continued on with their leader to Mecca to perform the Hajj.
